Eat fish, ethnic and romantic in Rome
February 24th, 2009 by the writerAfter having booked a appartamento a Roma, what can you do? Surely a sightseeing tour is the first activity, but also taking advantage of the gastronomic offers in the city is a must. The Eternal City is not only famous for its monuments and the remains of a great past but also and rightly so, for good food.
Today I bring you three suggestions for spending a great evening depending on what kind of food you like: if you want to try eating fish, eating ethnic food, or if you are simply looking for a romantic place where the atmosphere is very special.
So, speaking about seafood, a good option is the Picchio Rosso, which is located just outside Rome, in Italo Piccagli 101. The starters range from mango salad and lobster, to hot Albiola squids. For main courses, the choice is wide: sea bass and turbot, with all preparations taking place with fresh fish caught just offshore, special recipes are also prepared by the chef. For desserts there are different specialties: warm mint ice cream like dessert with chocolate sauce and almond flakes with hot chocolate which is the specialty of the house.
For a typic ethnic restaurant, we recommend the Himalaya’s Kashmir in via Principe Amedeo 325-327. The restaurant is distinctive and welcoming, with wood and velvet decor, and with Indian prints on the walls that take us into a fantasy and to a distant, mysterious world. There are 3 rooms separated by curtains and strings and here you can enjoy Indian and/or Pakistani specialties with their unmistakable spicy taste. There are three main menus: fish, vegetarian and non vegetarian. Amongst other things, you can try bundles of potatoes and peas, vegetable fritters and the Tandori chicken cooked in the Indian clay oven. To alleviate the taste of the chilli, soft drinks are served with yoghurt and fruit. The restaurant’s specialty is that all dishes are served in a typical frying pan in the centre of the table, making the meal a really fun shared experience.
Finally, do you want to spend a romantic evening at a restaurant? One of the must do’s for this kind of evening is the Zodiac, a restaurant that now boasts 42 years of experience. It has also been used for the location of successful movies and once you’ve seen it, you will soon understand why … it overlooks the city from over 136 meters high up, offering an incredible view. The dishes are typically Italian and Roman, including pizza cooked in a wood oven. Sometimes there are also evenings of jazz and cabaret shows for a truly complete evening experience.
You want to know about other restaurants in Rome? There is a lot of choice, one year wouldn’t be enough to discover all of them. Meanwhile, for starters you can always book a appartamento Roma and use it as a starting point for exploring the city and its surroundings.
